ICSE STEAM vision

ICSE STEAM Vision supports teachers in designing innovative, interdisciplinary STEM learning experiences. Through European collaboration, mobility opportunities, and dialogue with education policymakers, the project generates sustainable impulses for the future of teacher education in Europe.

What is the project about?

AI content

ICSE STEAM Vision develops a European professional development programme for teachers that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and related disciplines through an interdisciplinary STEAM approach. Practice-oriented teaching modules addressing socially relevant challenges are co-designed by teachers and researchers. After piloting, they will be integrated in virtual, hybrid, and international learning environments. The project targets student teachers, in-service teachers, teacher educators, and policymakers. By strengthening European cooperation, promoting teacher mobility, and fostering innovative cross-curricular education, ICSE STEAM Vision contributes to the future development of teacher education across Europe.

ICSE STEAM vision at a Glance

Background

Europe is facing major challenges such as digitalisation, sustainability, and shortages of qualified professionals in STEM-related fields. At the same time, international studies show that many students struggle with mathematics and science. Teachers play a key role in addressing these developments.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) approaches connect STEM subjects with other disciplines and real-world societal challenges. As teachers are often only partially prepared for interdisciplinary teaching, ICSE STEAM Vision addresses this gap by developing innovative concepts for initial teacher education and continuous professional development at the European level.

Objectives

The project aims to empower teachers to become STEAM Visionaries who can prepare learners for the challenges of an increasingly digital, sustainable, and interconnected world. To achieve this, the project strengthens teachers’ subject-specific, pedagogical, and collaborative competences while fostering sustainable European networking.
ICSE STEAM Vision supports teachers across Europe in successfully implementing integrated and interdisciplinary STEAM education. Through a range of learning and mobility formats, the project increases teachers’ participation in European professional learning opportunities and contributes to the development of future-oriented, evidence-based education strategies.

Implementation and Results

The project will develop a shared European STEAM teacher education programme consisting of eight practice-oriented modules addressing current societal and technological challenges. The modules will be co-designed, tested, and evaluated by universities, teachers, and experts from different disciplines. Teachers and student teachers will participate in virtual, hybrid, and international mobility activities and become part of a European learning community. In addition, the project will, pilot European mobility opportunities for teachers, develop a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), produce policy briefs and recommendations for STEAM education, organise regional and European policy events and establish sustainable networks connecting teachers, higher education institutions, and policymakers. Through these activities, ICSE STEAM Vision strengthens collaboration between research, educational practice, and policymaking, ensuring the longterm integration of innovative STEAM education into teacher education systems across Europe.
