Chairs

Katja Maass

Katja is Professor of Mathematics Education and leader of international projects in mathematics and science education at the University of Education Freiburg. She founded the international conference series “Educating the Educators- International confrence on approaches to scaling-up professional development in STEM education” which is succesfully running since 2015. Her work is distinguished by both a local and international orientation and she relies on excellent networks to research, policy and practice. As the founding director of ICSE she aims to take European collaboration in STEM education to a next level to maximise quality, equality and innovation in day-to-day STEM teaching.

Maria Evagorou

Maria Evagorou is associate professor in Science Education at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. Her research focuses on exploring and enhancing students’ argumentation and system thinking skills within science education with the use of technology. More specifically, the emphasis of her work is on students’ talk when they engage in the discussion of socio-scientific issues and how the use of online technologies can enhance students’ argumentation skills and inquiry-based learning. Her work combines both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Maria has published in referred journals and books, has co-edited a book titled Trends in Science Education (in Greek) and has received EU funding to work on projects on argumentation in science.

Elena Schäfer is Head of ICSE consortium & Educational Planning at ICSE. She is Coordinator of ICSE’s biennial international conference series ‘ETE – Educating the Educators’. In addition to her extensive experience in managing EU projects for various EU funding programmes, she also leads the International ICSE Consortium, which is co-hosting ETE V 2025.

Mónica Baptista

Mónica Baptista is an associate professor and deputy director of the Institute of Education of the Univerisity of Lisbon.

 

Michiel Doorman

Michiel Doorman is associate professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His research interests are context-based mathematics education, inquiry-based learning, dealing with sustainability and addressing equity in science and mathematics education. Currently, he is also scientific director at the Freudenthal Institute.

Stefan Zehetmeier

Stefan Zehetmeier is an associate professor at the University of Klagenfurt (Austria). He is deputy director of the university’s Institute for Instructional and School Development. His interests include educational research, mathematics teacher education, school development, and professional learning. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics and physics education, a doctoral degree in education, and a habilitation in teacher education.

Dr. Oliver Straser

Oliver Straser is Head of Research and Design of ICSE PH Freiburg. His research interests include investigating the possible applications of 3D printing technologies in science education, researching the use of escape rooms in STEM subjects and investigating the effectiveness of extracurricular activities to generate enthusiasm for STEM subjects, particularly with a gender-specific focus.

Gultekin Cakmakci

Gultekin Cakmakci is a professor of Science Education at Hacettepe University, Turkey. He is the director of Hacettepe STEM & Maker Lab, which aims to promote STEM education in formal, informal and non-formal settings.

 

Marta Romero Ariza

Marta R. Ariza is an Academic Tenure in Science Education at the University of Jaén (Spain), who deeply believes in the power of science and evidence-based education to shape a better world. She has been actively involved in research and international collaboration to improve science education and teacher professional development in this field, since 2006.

Michiel Doorman

Michiel Doorman is associate professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Currently, he is also scientific director at the Freudenthal Institute.

Martin Bilek

Prof. Dr. Martin Bílek is full professor and head of the Department of Chemistry and Chemistry Education at Faculty of Education Charles University in Prague, Czechia. His scientific and pedagogical activities are focused on didactics of natural sciences and technical subjects, with a special focus on chemistry, curricular analysis of natural science education and Information and Communication Technology in science and technical education. He is member of many scientific societies and boards and published about 160 research and pedagogical publications.
